Screenwriting publications
There are far too many screenwriting books to place them on a page or a website, and the number of scriptwriting magazines is also steadily growing. We have not read every book on screenwriting, but we have read enough to recommend a few of the good ones.
Screenwriting books
William Goldman, Adventures in the Screen Trade. This book is less about proper writing format and three act structure, but more about Goldman's stories in the industry. Invaluable for a screenwriter.
Vicki King, How to Write a Screenplay in 20 Days. We don't think you'll write a great screenplay in 20 days, but Vicki does a good job in getting you pumped up to write. And if you're one of those people who likes to get a first draft done as quickly as you can, this is the book for you.
Jennifer Lerch, 500 ways to beat the Hollywood Reader. We love this book, which contains many valuable tips for characterization and story.
Syd Field has many scriptwriting books. His latest edition describing foundations in the process should contain an excellent breakdown of the three act structure. Of course, there are many fine books on screenwriting. These are merely the books we suggest.
Screenwriting magazines and other publications
Script Magazine and Creative Screenwriting are two of the top choices in terms of screenwriters talking about their craft. The Hollywood Reporter – If you're seriously thinking about getting into the business, it's essential that you read the Hollywood Reporter to gain insight into the day to day business transactions in Hollywood . Lists of all sales and deals are printed daily. Variety – Another highly recommended trade publication. Most film companies have both Variety and the Hollywood Reporter. If you have any other suggestions for screenwriting books or magazines, please contact us, and we'll review the material for possible promotion. |
